Story

Noise is a serious health and environmental issue. According to the Europe Environment Agency, one million healthy years of life are lost every year due to noise effects on health. Annoyance and sleep disturbance account for the bulk of the burden of disease linked to noise.

According to the 2017 Toronto Public Health Study, How Loud is Too Loud?, over 92% of Toronto residents are exposed to a noise decibel level that exceeds the World Health Organization’s recommended level for a restful, restorative sleep. The study also showed that nearly 60% of noise in Toronto can be attributed to traffic noise. To make matters worse, there is a growing percentage of vehicle owners who illegally modify their exhaust systems, making their vehicles louder and increasing emissions by reducing or eliminating emission controls.

Toronto’s Noise Bylaw Review is our opportunity to advocate for changes and enforcement of existing bylaws that will benefit us and the planet. You can help us engage and inform people about what they can do to let the City of Toronto and elected officials know that we want a better sounding Toronto.

While many of us are bothered by excessive noise, certain residents are also exposed to higher levels of traffic noise and burdened with the highest levels of health impacts. Residents on lower incomes are often forced to live on busy streets, and closer to industrial areas. Additionally, auditory cues for the visually impaired are muffled when navigating through our city. People who have had brain injuries are more susceptible to noise. Ultimately, noise creates additional barriers for many who are already struggling.

One thing we all have in common: none of us have a defense against noise. We can’t close our ears. Please donate to help us amplify the voices of Toronto residents, and to help build a healthier and happier city.

In partnership with No More Noise Toronto.
