World Green Roof Day
JUNE 6 , 2024 – Happy World Green Roof Day! To celebrate, our partners at Green Roof Infrastructure Network of BC (GRIN) hosted tours of the Loblaws green roof in North Vancouver. We are working with GRIN to map existing and potential green infrastructure in Vancouver so that we can combat the climate crisis using the power of nature. Green roofs offer many benefits, including:
- cleaning and cooling the air and water,
- suppressing fire,
- reducing greenhouse gas emissions,
- protecting materials from degeneration,
- providing opportunities for urban agriculture and human well-being, and
- creating conditions for biodiversity.
Dr. Chrstine Thuring, Executive Director of GRIN, shares the importance of green roofs in the fight against the climate crisis: “Pre-settlement, these unceded lands were covered by a mosaic of ecosystems that were spongey, cool and sequestered carbon. Today, roofs occupy between 20 and 40% of urban surfaces…Compared to land at grade, roofs are prime real estate to offset the impacts of the built environment.”
