Short Story

Belfountain is surrounded by three huge, new proposed development projects that are happening at the same time.   Our water and environment are at risk.  If ever there was a place where water needs protection –   it is Belfountain and the West Credit River. Even though our hamlet is situated in the Greenbelt, the Niagara Escarpment and a UNESCO Biosphere, these important restrictions don’t seem to be enough to slow down the urban sprawl impact. In order to stop this development, we need your help.

It appears development is to occur at any cost, whether it changes the face of the land forever or impacts the quality and quantity of water in a very special environmentally sensitive area.

Belfountain Needs Your Help!

Belfountain is surrounded by three large new development proposals that are happening at the same time.  This is putting our water and environment at risk.  Yet, if ever there was a place where water needs protection, it is Belfountain and the West Credit River.

Even though our hamlet is situated in the Greenbelt, the Niagara Escarpment, and is a UNESCO Biosphere, these important restrictions don’t seem to be enough to slow down the bulldozers. In order to stop this development, we need your help.  Please donate today.

It appears that some want development to occur at any cost – regardless of the permanent changes to our beautiful landscape, or the impacts on the quality and quantity of our water in a special environmentally sensitive area.

Just consider that one developer also wants to build 75 monster homes in the settlement area of a Minor Urban Centre – almost doubling the size of Belfountain!

Previous attempts to pave over this land have failed – stretching back over 33 years.  Why? Because the quality and quantity of our water is at risk. This land has steep slopes and border important ravines on the landscape, which are hydro-geologically significant: they are water recharge areas for our community which is our well water!

This property is bound by a natural heritage woodlot to the east and the Paris Galt Moraine in the south. On any given day, you may find the endangered Jefferson salamander, chorus frogs, painted turtles, meadowlarks, and at-risk bobolinks on the land. Please help us save this natural spectacle by donating today!

The proposed homes will have wells and septic systems and range in size from 2,500 to 4,500 square feet.  As it is a rural setting, there is no infrastructure in place, meaning years of construction, pavement, sidewalks, driveways and endless noise and dust.

Can you visualize the water draw for these sizable homes, and the septic nitrate release, 40% into the groundwater, merging with the existing nitrates and sulphate deposits? How long will it take for water volume to the community to diminish?  How long will the water flowing to the hamlet remain clean?

So it’s simple: this land should not be developed. We will need your help to prevent this development. Why should this community once again be forced to pay to protect our water?

So we will fight it again. To do so, we need expert hydro-geology reports, water testing, ecological updates, and legal representation, costs in excess of $100,000.  So please help and donate today!

Protecting the unique environment of Belfountain will require the efforts of many, within and outside of our community.

Thank you in advance for your support.

Small is Beautiful.
