Supporting a Just Transition Off Oil and Gas in Newfoundland and Labrador

MAY 8 , 2024 – Staff member Abbie Branchflower just returned from a weekend conference in St John’s, NL. The conference, hosted by Mixed Coast Collective, centered on supporting a just transition off of fossil fuels in Newfoundland and Labrador and opposing the Bay du Nord project.

In spite of being the third largest producer of fossil fuels in Canada, the industry in Newfoundland and Labrador is often overlooked in the journey to net-zero. Alongside several partners, we are working on a community-based, worker-led and government-supported transition away from the oil and gas industry for the province.

The conference was an excellent opportunity to learn from various stakeholders, as well as to convene advocates for discussion and brainstorming. Abbie also enjoyed her first visit to the province, particularly the charming “jellybean houses” of St John’s.
