A Win for Healthy Yards!
JUNE 1, 2022 – The town of Smiths Falls, Ontario recently rescinded an order to destroy a carefully constructed naturalized garden, home to 150 native trees and plants.
Naturalized gardens, or healthy yards, are planted to support biodiversity and cultivated in a natural way. They feature native plants and dead leaves and twigs are left to nourish the soil. These yards improve air quality, store carbon, prevent floods, have a natural cooling effect and reduce water usage, all while providing habitat for local insects and wildlife.
We are working to empower communities across Canada to pursue naturalizing their yards and set a precedent in favour of this eco-friendly form of landscaping.
