Summer Gravel Rush: An Update on Mount Nemo

Mount Nemo cliffs and fall colours.

If you follow us on social media, you may recall an Ontario Land Tribunal (OLT) of epic proportions that took place this summer. Our partners from CORE Burlington have been fighting for six years to protect Mount Nemo, a designated UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, from the negative impacts of expanded quarry operations. If granted, this proposal would see Nelson Aggregates add 124 acres of quarry operations to their existing 540-acre mega-quarry.

The fight came to a head this year in a 62-day OLT hearing. During that time, the Tribunal heard from 37 witnesses and received more than 17,000 pages of materials – including a joint submission featuring the written comments of 66 citizen participants.

At this time, we are awaiting a final decision from the Tribunal. We want to give a huge shout out to CORE Burlington, as well as everyone who has supported and donated towards this cause. People standing up for what they believe in is how we make change!
