Short Story

For today’s youth, the climate crisis is the defining challenge of their lifetime, with impacts already felt, particularly in marginalized communities. However, youth voices are often excluded from crucial climate justice discussions that will shape the world they inherit. Moreover, underserved and equity-seeking communities face systemic barriers that make it difficult for them to access safe, enriching spaces where they can advocate for intersectional justice priorities.

Our youth-led project aims to empower young advocates by providing them with the funds and resources needed to engage in climate justice campaigns, coalitions, and community-based initiatives. By centering their voices, we seek to advance intersectional justice and ensure the inclusion of underserved groups.

Story

Every year, young people rise up, demanding accountability and real change in the fight for climate justice. Shake Up Your Community is dedicated to empowering youth to lead impactful initiatives.

We are seeking long-term ethical funding to increase access for equity-deserving youth to participate in climate justice campaigns in their community. You can help us make a difference—please donate today to support meaningful leadership opportunities for young changemakers!

Our project focuses on supporting young leaders through on-the-ground work and campaigns that educate communities about environmental justice. We provide funding to assist with accessibility and travel, enabling youth to participate in professional development opportunities in this sector and enhance their intersectional activism. In 2024, for example, our youth leaders attended the first-ever National Environmental Justice Symposium and the UBC Communicating Climate Hope Conference, where they presented and facilitated workshops on the importance of improving Canadian environmental health policies and practices, with a focus on enhancing outcomes for minoritized, marginalized, and underserved populations. They also shared our Rest, Recovery, Resistance (3RS) framework, which centers on promoting sustainable community organizing practices as a means of investing in long-term climate resiliency. These opportunities provided youth with access to a collaborative space where they could connect with diverse peers, share their expertise, and learn about solutions for building community resilience, restoration, and conservation.

With your support, we can strengthen our ability to promote action and mobilization by providing funds and support that help youth leaders access opportunities to learn about intersectional, evidence-informed, and community-centered strategies. This allows them to advocate for climate action plans that reduce emissions, promote renewable energy, and support marginalized communities. Many young people from diverse backgrounds lack opportunities to engage in climate justice work, limiting their ability to voice their perspectives. This project empowers them to participate in collaborative decision-making spaces, ensuring their voices are included in climate justice campaigns and coalitions while promoting meaningful responses to calls to action within their communities.

Together, we can support youth-led climate justice and turn our shared dreams of equitable, climate-resilient futures into reality. Donate today and be part of the change!
