Around the world, youth are taking their governments to court over inadequate climate targets. In 2019, a lawsuit was brought forward by seven youth from across Ontario arguing that the Provincial Government’s inadequate climate targets accelerate the dangers of climate change and infringe upon their constitutional rights. Years later, after so many efforts to keep the fight alive, a legal victory was beginning to look possible – only to have the Ontario Government cancel their emission reduction targets legislation altogether. Rather than let this story fade into the background, we’ve decided to use one of the strongest tools at our disposal: Sketch Comedy.
We’re doing a parody of the small claim’s TV court show, The People’s Court. It’s shot in a real courtroom set with a larger-than-life, no-nonsense judge personality, Judge Rodrigo, played by viral comedian Rodrigo Fernandez-Stoll (Kim’s Convenience; Son of a Critch). Let’s see if the defendants can stand the heat from Judge Rodrigo and his never-disagreeing bailiff Alexander, played by Alex Tindal (Baroness Von Sketch Show). The sketch is written and performed by some of Canada’s most impactful political comedy voices: the aforementioned Fernandez-Stoll and Gwynne Phillips, the team behind viral hits We’re Building a Spa!, To Catch a Developer, and The People of Ontario Have Questions (500K+ views), along with Miguel Rivas of Hot Globe and Beaverton fame. The sketch will be released widely on social platforms to reach audiences who may not otherwise engage with legal or climate policy issues. Let’s make ‘em laugh. AND? Think. We need your help to support basic production and distribution costs. Donate today and help us raise awareness about this important case. Donors will receive a charitable tax receipt.
