Young Farmers & Farm Workers Scaling Out Food Sovereignty in Canada

Raised:

$400

Goal:

$12,000

If you want food system transformation, young farmers are at the forefront. We are organizing to transform how we grow food and build social movements that work for a fair food system for all. However, young farmers are less than 1% of the Canadian population…to transform our food systems, we need your help.

Why you care:

You want a food system that makes the people and the environment healthier. You want a food system where you can access affordable, healthy food, and the farmers and farm workers have a dignified income. You want a fair food system for you and for all.

Young farmers and farm workers are at the forefront of the solutions:

Young farmers and farm workers across Canada / Turtle Island are at the intersection of the polycrisis facing our food systems, and they are at the forefront of the solutions. They don’t just grow vegetables, fruit, flowers, medicine, trees, animals, and so much more for communities, they also grow social movements that impact everyone who eats!

How to grow the solutions for all:

To scale the growing practices and the social movement building necessary to achieve a fair food system for all, we are organizing regional agroecology exchanges across Canada / Turtle Island. Agroecological principles guide us towards food sovereignty, which means that we–the growers, eaters, community members–hold the decision-making power of our food system, not oligopolies or billionaires or World Trade Organizations.

Farmers and farm workers gather at these exchanges to connect and learn from each other, and plan actions moving forward. Host farms demonstrate an agroecological growing practice and hold a group dialogue on how to scale the social movement aspect of agroecology. Participants leave with new stronger connections to the people, the agroecological farm practices and social movement practices to apply in their communities.

Stronger together. How you can support:

While growers are literally essential to the life of communities, they are a small piece (farmers are ~1% of the Canadian population) and depend on the relationships with community members to create, maintain, and protect our food system. Everyone eats! We need to strengthen the grower-eater relationships for a food system that works for all.

Together, we can raise the funds that will support young farmers and workers to gather in the Atlantic region, Ontario, the Prairies, and the West to exchange knowledge on how to grow a fair food system for all. Your contribution directly supports growing your food in a healthy way and a fair food system for you and for all.
