Saving Our Urban Forest and Wetland (Stop the Chop!)

Raised:

$65,974

Goal:

$68,000

Kingston is predicted to become a heat island. Yet, across our city cooling, carbon-storing trees are being clearcut and wetlands paved over, mainly for unaffordable homes. This will get worse if our urban boundary is expanded. There is little thought to the increasing climate crisis, the biodiversity crisis, neighbourhood rights, and the local Indigenous population.

Before….and Now.

Our forests and wetlands need your help!

As the climate crisis is devastating our planet, the future of Kingston’s nearest downtown forest and wetland is going before the Ontario Land Tribunal. Our previous City Council voted against the plan but a developer is still trying to push through the clearcutting of 37 acres – 1800 trees – beside a sacred burial ground for the Indigenous people of the area. This clearcutting would include a 220-year-old white oak tree (shown below), also sacred to the local Indigenous community.

As you can see, we’ve had wonderful support from many generous donors! All these people are heroes who care about nature in Kingston and don’t want to see it destroyed by greed.

We have also raised funds with two amazing fundraisers at Musiikki and Grant Hall at Queen’s. In both cases, young people – many from Queen’s University – came to us wanting to help, and they certainly did! We have raised thousands due to their dedication, along with efforts from local stores, artists, musicians, and others.

It has been amazing watching Kingstonians of all ages working to protect the Tannery forest – and nature generally – especially as we face climate and biodiversity crises. We can’t thank them enough!

You can help us defend City Council’s decision to stop this disastrous plan at the Tribunal. We have hired a hydrogeologist, an envirotoxicologist, a wetland/forest ecologist, and a land-use planner to present our case against a very wealthy developer. This has cost us thousands of dollars, but the fight is worth it!

Please help us prevent forest and wetland destruction.

Every donation counts!

The wetlands now.

The proposed development.
