Protecting Springwater and Our Community’s Health and Natural Heritage

Springwater is a vibrant community known for its rolling hills, lush forests, and rich farmland. It offers a peaceful retreat for hikers, day-trippers, and residents alike. The area is rich in history and natural beauty, including the historic Nine Mile Portage Trail — an ancient Indigenous trade route and military supply line during the War of 1812. This trail connects Lake Simcoe to Georgian Bay and remains a symbol of the region’s deep cultural and historical significance.

At the heart of this Springwater lies the internationally significant Minesing Wetlands, a UNESCO-recognized wetland complex that plays a crucial role in flood prevention, water filtration, and biodiversity. The wetlands are home to numerous species at risk, including the rare Hine’s emerald dragonfly, one of the most endangered dragonfly species in North America. The health of these wetlands is essential to maintaining the delicate balance of the local environment.

However, this natural balance is under serious threat from the proposed expansion of Galibier Materials’ Lewis Pit. If approved, the expansion would increase dust pollution and other harmful emissions, directly impacting air quality and community health.

The environmental cost would be severe. The expansion could disrupt local wetlands, damage habitats for at-risk species, and compromise the water table, affecting both the local ecosystem and the drinking water source for residents. The constant extraction would also threaten the peace and tranquility that makes Springwater such a special place.

The Chiefs of Ontario have raised serious concerns about the potential impact on Indigenous heritage and treaty rights. The Minesing Wetlands, the Nine Mile Portage Trail, and the surrounding lands hold deep cultural and spiritual significance, and any disruption to the natural environment risks further erasing this important history.

With strong community support, we have already made progress – but we’re not done yet. Your donation will help us secure the legal expertise and experts needed to stand strong at the Ontario Land Tribunal and protect Springwater’s future. Let’s finish what we’ve started — together!
