It is with mixed emotions that we announce that Burkhard Mausberg will be leaving Small Change Fund. After eight impactful years as President, Burkhard has chosen to take a much-deserved period of rest and renewal beginning in March 2026. We fully support his decision and wish him all the very best in this next chapter.

Burkhard has been an integral part of the success and growth of Small Change Fund. Building on the organization’s early spirit of innovation and start-up energy that defined its founding in 2008, he brought focus, structure, and the resources needed to unlock its full potential to respond to community needs. 

Burkhard built a talented and dedicated team, guided us through numerous successful initiatives, and helped hundreds of community organizations achieve their goals. His leadership has been marked by vision, generosity, and an unwavering commitment to people and the planet.

Known for his behind-the-scenes impact in building enduring organizations like the Greenbelt Foundation and Environmental Defence Canada, Burkhard brought that same steady hand and commitment to lasting change to Small Change Fund—work that will continue to ripple well into the future.

Under his leadership, Small Change Fund has seen remarkable progress in areas such as:

• Program Expansion: Reaching more communities than ever before and launching our own initiatives on climate change, youth civic engagement, the Greenbelt, transit, and more.
• Fundraising Growth: Increasing our annual budget more than eightyfold in seven years, enabling greater investment in vital services and digital transformation.
• Community Partnerships: Deepening our relationships with local leaders and partners across the country, helping them bring meaningful, lasting change to their communities.

We are incredibly grateful for Burkhard’s dedication, passion, and tireless efforts. His vision has been a driving force behind the emergence of Small Change Fund as an effective force for people and the environment, and his impact will be felt for years to come.

Burkhard will continue to support Small Change Fund during the transition to new leadership, helping to ensure a smooth and seamless handover. We are fortunate to have a strong, experienced, supportive and highly collaborative team who will carry forward our mission with confidence and energy. The Board of Directors has begun the search for our next President, and we will share updates as this process unfolds.
